Defending the Fleet

Innovation First and Foremost

Ultra work closely with some of the world's leading defence research laboratories, such as the UK's Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, the US Naval Underwater Warfare Center, and Defence Research and Development Canada. This allows us to understand military requirements at their earliest stage, and to work with the scientific community to exploit their research outputs.

The Royal Navy's new Sonar 2170 Surface Ship Torpedo Defence (SSTD) system demonstrates our track record of pulling through advanced technology to the front line. Bringing together functionality for torpedo detection, classification and localisation, command-team tactical advice and countermeasures deployment, SSTD is the first fully integrated surface ship torpedo detection and defence system to enter service Anywhere in the world. Entering service on time andwithin budget, Sonar 2170 was Commended by the MoD's own Integrated Project Team and cited within the MoD's 2005 annual report.

Ultra have also developed an Open System Architecture, unique in its approach, which is already employed in SSTD. This same architecture is now being exploited in Ultra's other real-time processing systems.
